Brief Overview

Stories Through the Ages hosted a Spelling Bee competition for underprivileged children in the Sector 40 slums of Chandigarh, India. There were two separate grade levels: 4th – 6th and 7th – 10th. Each grade level had 12 and 16 participants respectively. The competition was held in the main hall of the Sector 40 gurdwara.

The competitions

Format

The format of the competition was as follows: a short written test and a final oral Spelling Bee using the rules of the Scripps National Spelling Bee. The participants were given 10 words from the original list for the written test. Participants with the lowest scores were eliminated, and 8 moved on to the final Spelling Bee for their grade level. There, the rest of the word list was exhausted, and we had to use words unfamiliar to the students to determine our winner. For the 7th – 10th Spelling Bee, the winning word was “mansion”.

Population Served

The population served in this project is one in imperative need: underprivileged children who come from uneducated families. They often do not have the wisdom or guidance of their parents to assist them in their studies, which is why Stories Through the Ages is stepping in to help assist.

Stories Through the Ages is a federal 501(c)3 Nonprofit Corporation. We serve underprivileged children and isolated senior citizens.
